Peugeot's 5008 Hybrid Takes Aim at Toyota's Fuel Economy Crown
The French have never been ones to follow conventional wisdom, and Peugeot's latest move proves that point beautifully

Peugeot’s new seven-seat 5008 Hybrid SUV has just landed with a claimed fuel consumption of 5.1 L/100 km, which puts it ahead of Toyota's well-established Kluger Hybrid in the efficiency stakes. What makes this particularly interesting is that Peugeot has managed this while fitting a massive 21-inch curved cockpit screen and pairing it with a dual-clutch transmission that actually feels responsive.
Performance: 107 kW, 230 Nm, 0-100 km/h 11.3 s
Efficiency + Range: 5.1 L/100 km; up to 1190 km highway on 55 L tank
Design highlight: 21-inch curved i-Cockpit display with AI voice assistant
Safety headline: No ANCAP yet – full-suite ADAS and 360° cameras standard
Fleet teaser: Fuel cost $9.3/100 km; EV equivalent about $2.9
You can choose between two variants: the Allure at $55,990 and the GT Premium at $67,990. Both have now hit showrooms, and both come with some genuinely impressive features like massaging front seats, AI voice control, and a five-year/200,000 km warranty.
The specs: 107 kW and 230 Nm of combined output, 0-100 km/h in 11.3 seconds, 5.1 L/100 km efficiency, and up to 1,190 km highway range from the 55-litre tank. The 21-inch curved i-Cockpit display includes AI voice assistance. No ANCAP rating yet, but comprehensive ADAS and 360-degree cameras come standard. Fleet costs work out to roughly $9.30 per 100 km for fuel, compared to about $2.90 for an equivalent EV.
Both Allure and GT Premium Hybrid variants share identical powertrains producing 107 kW and 230 Nm, with 11.3-second 0-100 km/h times and 5.1 L/100 km efficiency claims. The GT Premium's $12,000 premium buys Nappa leather, massage functions, and a panoramic sunroof.

Performance & Drivability
A 1.2-litre turbo three-cylinder pairs with a 15.6 kW motor through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission to deliver near-diesel efficiency without the noise. The electric motor helps mask turbo lag, while Eco, Normal, and Sport modes adjust throttle and steering response. Advanced Grip Control adds Snow, Mud, and Sand settings for off-road ventures.
Electric torque smooths gear changes, making the 5008 feel more responsive than its 11.3-second sprint time suggests. Light steering and a 10.8-metre turning circle ease city parking, while the long wheelbase provides settled highway cruising.
Design & Cabin Tech
The 21-inch panoramic screen curves toward the driver, floating above customisable "i-Toggle" shortcut tiles. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and 15-watt phone charging eliminate cable clutter. GT Premium adds Nappa leather, massage ventilation, and panoramic sunroof.
Seven individual seats slide and recline independently. Fold them all for a massive 2,232-litre cargo bay. Materials feel premium with recycled textiles and ambient lighting in eight colors. OTA updates and ChatGPT-powered voice control keep the tech current.

Market Insights
Toyota's Kluger GX Hybrid costs $54,220, uses 5.6 L/100 km, and hits 100 km/h in the low eights. Kia's Sorento HEV GT-Line is quicker (8.7 seconds) but costs $69,990 and still uses 5.8 L/100 km. Hyundai's new Santa Fe Hybrid sits mid-pack at $63,000 and 5.7 L/100 km. Peugeot undercuts the Koreans, matches Toyota on price, and beats them all on cabin tech and European style.
Verdict
The 5008 Hybrid suits families wanting European character, seven flexible seats, and diesel-like economy without plug-in complexity. The Allure offers strong value while the GT Premium adds genuine luxury touches. Cross-shop against Toyota Kluger Hybrid, Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid, and Kia Sorento Hybrid, but if advanced screen technology, seating versatility, and showroom presence matter, Peugeot's newcomer deserves consideration as the fresh alternative.
